James Gould

Local Historian - IN MEMORIAM

Called "the Oracle of Barnstable Village", Jim's contributions to the understanding of history in the entire region are well known, including many of our Village. He mapped the cemetery, conducted tours, documented and drew maps of many historic structures, and researched the genealogies of numerous Mills Families. He also co-authored the book Martsons Mills with Vivian Cushing. and Women of Barnstable with Nancy Shoemaker.   In 2020 he received the Barnstable Historical Commission’s Preservation Service Award. This elegy by David Churbuck of Cotuit and its linked obituary captures Jim's essence.
