Sawmill

By Jim Gould

There was a sawmill o the north sideof the road in Newtown where it merges from School Street into Old Mill Road.  Charles Crocker who grew up in the house across the street, remembers it in the  1920's being some distance from the road, powered by a gasoline engine.  The Marstons Mills Historical Society has postcards of the building dating from about 1900-1920.  In earlier times lumber was sawed in pits which permitted the saw to cut vertically through the standing log to make board lumber
